Parne
Gadje
Parne Gadje play a whirling emotional concoction of
Macedonian Rembetikas , RRoma ballads and Middle Eastern dirges.
How can we best describe it - Balkan improvisations? Bosporus blues?
It doesn't matter. One listen and the question on everyone's lips
is "Where the hell does this stuff come from!". There is heart in
this music and that's what counts. Set alight by front man Marc
Constandses' masterful bandoneon playing and red-blooded approach
to interpreting the tunes, the instrumentation (bandoneon, guitar,
banjo, dobro, self-built bicycle-tire bass, velofoon, clarinet,
saxophone violin and a host of unusual percussive sounds) is unconventional
but blindingly effective. An absolute must for anyone who has had
the good fortune to be touched by the magnificent labyrinth of Balkan
underground folk variations. Class, depth and beauty.
